Dewsbury & District
Model Aero club was formed in September 1966. In the early days it was only a
control line club that used as its flying field the site of the old Dewsbury
Feast ground. In 1968 the club moved to a new site at Sands lane playing
fields, which enabled radio control models to be flown. This site was used
until work started in 1975 on the towns flood defences. This then meant
that the field was too small to fly radio control models. For a while most of
the club moved to fly at Pildacre, Ossett, but this was not an ideal location
due to members of the public being in the near vicinity of the models flying.
The Club members then started looking for a new site. An area at the far
end of Sands Lane playing fields was thought to have the best potential,
although derelict and overgrown it was far enough away from houses and was
accessed by driving along the river bank. Permission was obtained to rent the
field and after much time effort and money over the years, the field has been
transformed from a rough piece of land in the middle of no where to what must
be one of the finest flying fields in West Yorkshire. Control Line section
Dewsbury & District Model Aero club have obtained
permission to use the playing fields at Spen Valley High school, Roberttown
Lane, Liversedge for the purpose of flying Control line model aircraft.
The fields that are to be used are the ones at the bottom of
the hill adjacent to the factory. Model flying can be carried
out when the school is not in use, and members should obtain
a certificate to be displayed in their car window when parking.
This enables the caretaker to identify that we have permitted use
of the field. Flying times are exactly as our main site at Sands Lane, only
without the break at tea-time.
